Frequently asked questions

How long does an EAD take in 2026?+
The refreshed aggregate I-765 EAD range is 11.3-15.4 months. Category matters: OPT, STEM OPT, adjustment-based EADs, and renewals can follow different queues.
Can I work before my EAD arrives?+
Filing Form I-765 does not itself authorize employment or extend status. You may work only while another current authorization applies, such as valid status, an unexpired EAD, a qualifying grandfathered extension, or a category-specific rule.
What if my EAD expires before my renewal is approved?+
Most renewals filed on or after Oct. 30, 2025 do not receive a general automatic extension. A qualifying renewal filed before that cutoff may retain up to 540 days only if every filing-date, category, timeliness, and document condition is met. Other category-specific extensions follow their own authority.
How do I check my EAD status?+
Track your I-765 at my.uscis.gov. GreenLight decodes status messages like 'Card Is Being Produced' or 'Case Was Approved' into plain English.
Does the EAD category matter for processing time?+
Yes. Category (c)(9) (I-485 pending) is processed differently than category (c)(3) (F-1 OPT). USCIS posts separate processing times by category at egov.uscis.gov/processing-times.
