This is a sample I-765 (C03A) timeline — realistic milestones, real status names, plain-English explanations. It is not a real user's case.
USCIS received your I-765 OPT application and assigned a receipt number. No action needed — the clock on your case officially starts now. Keep your receipt notice (Form I-797) when it arrives in the mail.
USCIS sent your I-797 receipt notice by mail. Expect it in 7–10 business days. Once you have it, store it safely — you'll need the receipt number to track your case and it proves you applied on time.
A USCIS officer has picked up your case for review. This is a normal processing step. It doesn't mean anything is wrong — most I-765 OPT cases move from active review to approval without any additional contact.
Your OPT EAD has been approved. USCIS will now produce and mail your physical EAD card. The approval notice (I-797) lists your authorized employment start and end dates. Processing time from receipt to approval: 52 days.
Your physical EAD card has been mailed. Delivery typically takes 5–10 business days via USPS. Do not start work before your printed EAD start date, even if the card arrives early.
USPS scanned your EAD card at the mail facility. You should receive it within 1–3 business days. If it doesn't arrive within 10 days, you can request a replacement via USCIS.
USCIS updated your case record — this is a routine administrative close after the EAD card was delivered. Your case is complete. Your EAD is valid until the end date printed on the card.
